The patriarchic and capitalist nature of the diet, fitness and beauty industries keep us focusing on all the wrong things and wasting a LOT of money, time and energy, blaming our 'lack of commitment' on why we don't just 'get it done'.
The majority of women get stuck in a people pleasing downward spiral, where the lack of boundaries and everyday anxiety lead to constant swings between procrastination and perfectionism, and the only escape is being told that the answer is more 'self care' time.
"Just buy another detox, drink a green juice, expensive bath bomb or go to another retreat or yoga class."
That's the answer, right? No it is not.

I am Mary Beth, started 15 months ago. Could barely walk. Recovering from a foot injury in both feet (plantar fasciitis). Have tried to lose weight with nearly every programme under the sun since I was 40. I’m 58 now. I tried all of these quite diligently: the zone. Body for life (bill phillips). Eat for life (harvey diamond). Anti-inflammatory diets. Blood type diets. Training for triathlons (little ones, called sprints) which did work in my 30s. After 40, nothing worked long-term.
Now this. I am taking off weight and keeping it off and found a lifestyle I can sustain. I have lost 2 stone (nearly 30lbs) and am down 4 dress sizes. Love how I feel. Love how I am looking. Love who I am becoming.
And this is how I did it: It pays to start your day off with you. When you take care of your own wellness needs first, it is a proactive step that has ramifications for other parts of your life and the rest of your day. Putting yourself first in the day, starts at bedtime. It is very important to not burn the candle at both ends.
When I pushed myself too hard the day before with social activities, it always showed up the next day.
Sometimes it took 2-3 days to recover from missed hours of sleep. When you respect your body, others respect your priorities.
Eventually over the month, I heard both my husband and son explaining to each other, “she can’t do that now as she needs to do this right now.” (get to bed early, stretch, lift, etc.)
Life will happen. It isn’t a matter of “if” life will encroach, but “when.”
So it pays to be proactive and develop self-care strategies. The most important part is starting fresh each day and renewing your commitment to yourself.
